- Why are the two alcoves either side of my chimney breast different widths?
- Because the flue inside the breast is rarely central to it, and in the older Esher property the breast was built around the flue rather than measured off the room. A matched-looking pair has to be made as two different units. Anything sold as a standard size will show the difference the moment it is in.
- My house is listed. Can you still fit alcove units?
- Usually, but the route matters. Listed building consent applies to internal alterations, so the design has to be agreed with Elmbridge before work starts, and reversible fixings — screwed rather than glued or chased in — are often the answer that gets approved. That is a design decision made at the start, not a fix applied later.
