- Will a fitted wardrobe hold on a new-build flat wall?
- Not on plasterboard fixed on dabs, which is what most of the town-centre flats have. The board is held off the blockwork on adhesive blobs, so a fixing into it alone has nothing behind it and a loaded wardrobe will pull away. The answer is proper backing — either fixing through to the structure, or building a timber ground first. It is a normal part of the job here, not an extra.
- The ceilings on my estate are only 2.35m. What does that rule out?
- Nothing, but it changes the proportions. A full-height run of plain doors under a low ceiling reads as a wall rather than furniture, so the design usually wants a horizontal break — a drawer bank, a shelf return or a change of colour at about waist height — to give the eye something to land on. Get that wrong and the room feels shorter than it is.
