What Reigate houses do to joinery.

- Yes, by running it rather than buying it. Victorian and Edwardian profiles here are commonly over 150mm tall and are not stocked by any merchant, so the section is copied from a returned offcut and machined to match. Buying the nearest standard and hoping is the thing that makes new joinery look new.
- Does the picture rail have to be kept?
- It does not have to be, but a fitted piece that ignores it will look wrong even when every measurement is right. The rail sets a horizon the whole room is composed around. Either the joinery lands on that line, or the rail comes off the wall the joinery sits on — what does not work is running a cabinet through it and leaving the rail hanging either side.
